    Getting Started

What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

    April 15, 2026

Welcoming therapy office with two chairs — your first session

If you're reading this, you may be thinking about starting therapy—and feeling a little nervous about it. Maybe you've been going back and forth for weeks, months, or even years. Maybe someone suggested it and part of you is curious, but another part wonders: What will it actually be like?

Let me start by saying this: it is completely normal to feel anxious about your first therapy session. You are about to share parts of your life with someone you've never met—that takes real courage. And the fact that you're even considering it speaks volumes about your strength.

What Actually Happens in a First Session

Your first therapy session is often called an intake or consultation. Think of it less like an exam and more like a conversation. Here's what you can typically expect:

    • Introductions and rapport building. We'll start by getting to know each other. I want you to feel comfortable, so there's no rush to dive into anything heavy.
    • Understanding what brought you here. I'll gently ask about what's been going on in your life and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. You share only what you're ready to share.
    • A look at your history. I may ask about your background, family, health, and past experiences—not to pry, but to understand the full picture of who you are.
    • Setting goals together. We'll talk about what you'd like to work toward, whether that's managing anxiety, navigating a life transition, or simply having a safe space to process.
    • Questions and next steps. You'll have time to ask me anything—about my approach, how sessions work, or what to expect going forward.

    Common Fears About Starting Therapy

Many people share similar worries before their first session. Let me address a few:

    • "What if I don't know what to say?" That's okay. I'll guide the conversation. You don't need to have your thoughts perfectly organized.
    • "What if I cry?" Tears are welcome here. They are not a sign of weakness—they are a sign that something matters to you.
    • "What if my problems aren't 'big enough' for therapy?" There is no minimum threshold for seeking support. If something is weighing on you, it's worth exploring.
    • "What if it doesn't work?" Therapy is a process, not a one-time fix. The first session is simply the beginning, and we'll move at your pace.

    There's No Pressure Here

I want you to know something important: your first session is not a commitment to anything beyond that one conversation. You are free to take your time. You are free to ask questions. You are free to decide if therapy—and if I—feel like the right fit for you.

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear." — 1 John 4:18

This space is built on trust, compassion, and grace. You set the pace.

The Benefits of Taking That First Step

Starting therapy can feel like the hardest part—and in many ways, it is. But once you take that step, you open the door to:

    • A safe, confidential space to be fully yourself
    • Tools and strategies tailored to your unique situation
    • Greater self-awareness and emotional clarity
    • Relief from carrying everything alone
    • A deeper connection to your faith, purpose, and peace

Whether you're dealing with anxiety, burnout and stress, or a major life transition, therapy can help you move from surviving to thriving.
